The morning line odds and post positions for the 2020 Preakness Stakes are now available, which means we can start to break down this final race of the 2020 Triple Crown.
Authentic, who won the Kentucky Derby at the beginning of September, is the favourite with odds of 9-5. Authentic drew post 9, which trainer Bob Baffert seemed happy with. Art Collector is the second favourite with odds of 5-2 out of post 3. Swiss Skydiver and Thousand Words are the other two contenders in the race with morning line odds of 6-1 each.
The field of 11 horses is a typical size for the Preakness Stakes, and with a field this size anything can happen. Let’s get into it!

Preakness Stakes Top Picks
Below I will give my favourite two picks for the 2020 Preakness Stakes. I will definitely be adding some exacta’s on these two horses, which should have a very solid payout if they do both finish in the top 2.
Art Collector 5-2
Art Collector is my pick to win the Preakness Stakes. This horse did not compete in either the Belmont Stakes or Kentucky Derby this year, but he is a very fast horse who has won 5 straight races, including wins in May, June, July and August this year.
Art Collector is coming off of wins at the Blue Grass Stakes and the Ellis Park Derby. At the Blue Grass Stakes he finished ahead of Swiss Skydiver, and in both races he finished with times of just over 1:48, which is significantly faster than the Authentic’s finishes at the same 1 1/8 mile distances. The Preakness is only slightly longer than these races Art Collector has excelled at, and I think he should have enough in the tank to go the extra 1/16 of a mile.
Even if you don’t want to back Art Collector for the win, I would definitely include him in any exotic bets because he will surely be in contention down the stretch.
Thousand Words 6-1
Thousand Words is the Bob Baffert trained horse who I think may have the better chance of winning the Preakness. This is another horse who has not competed in the other two Triple Crown races this year, but after taking May and June off, he had two solid races finishing second in the Los Alamitos Derby in July and winning the Shared Belief Stakes in August. Thousand Words was the favourite to win the Los Alamitos Derby in July, but it was simply a very fast race with a superb performance by Uncle Chuck to win, so I’m not holding the second place against Thousand Words. He came back and got the win at the at the Shared Belief Stakes in August, which should help his confidence heading into the Preakness.
I do think Thousand Words has a very real chance of winning the Preakness, which is why I like him at odds of 6-1.
My favorite betting play for the Preakness will be exacta bets with Art Collector and Thousand Words finishing first and second, in either order. I may also take both horses to win because I think the odds are very fair for each horse at this time.
