Mage, who won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, is the favourite with odds of 8-5. Mage will be looking to win the race to keep his shot a a Triple Crown alive. First Mission (5-2), National Treasure (4-1) and Blazing Sevens (6-1) are the other contenders heading into the Preakness.

The field of 8 horses is a typical size for the Preakness Stakes, and with a field this size anything can happen. Let’s get into it!

Preakness Stakes Top Picks

Below I will give my favourite picks for the 2023 Preakness Stakes.  I will definitely be adding some exacta’s on these two horses, which should have a very solid payout if they do both finish in the top 2.

Mage 8-5

Mage ran a great race at the Kentucky Derby. I think Mage was overlooked leading into the Derby because he had finished second in the Florida Derby the month before the race. That said, he lost that race to Forte, who was the Derby favorite, before being pulled from the race due to an injury the morning of the Derby. If Forte was truly the fastest horse in the field, then Mage could easily have been the second based on his tight race with Forte at the Florida Derby. Bettors who saw this opportunity did well to cash Mage at 15-1 to win the Derby. Mage is easily the most accomplished and experienced horse in the Preakness field, and if he runs his race, I believe he could win and enter the Belmont Stakes with a shot at the Triple Crown.

National Treasure 4-1

My next pick will be the third favorite, National Treasure at odds of 4-1. This is a horse that finished 3rd in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last year, and who has shown glimpses of being a very fast horse. He didn’t perform well in the Santa Anita Derby in April, but that was after a 3 month layoff, and he still showed his speed down the stretch catching up to the top three finishers with every stride. If he runs a smart race he could have the speed to win the Preakness down the stretch.
