2018 Preakness Stakes Betting Picks and Morning Line Odds

The morning line odds and post positions for the 2018 Preakness Stakes are available, which means we can start to break down this second race of the Triple Crown.

Justify is the overwhelming favourite at odds of 1-2 after winning the Derby as the 3-1 favorite.  Justify gets the 7 post position, which is a decent drawing and should allow him to run a solid race.  Good Magic is the other horse to watch in this field of 8.  He drew the very solid 5th position and has morning line odds of 3-1 heading into Saturday.  These will be the two horses the majority of bettors will be keying on, but there are a couple other horses in this field who I think have an outside shot at the win.  Let’s get into it!

2018 Preakness Stakes Morning Line Odds

I’ve listed the morning line odds for the Preakness Stakes below.  These are the odds that each horse will open at on Saturday morning.  The odds will change throughout the day depending on the amount of money that is wagered on the various horses in the field.  Basically all of the bets taken on the Preakness will go into a betting pool and the odds will be decided by the amount wagered on each horse.  To learn more about this betting system head over to our parimutuel betting page.

  • Justify 1/2
  • Good Magic 3/1
  • Quip 12/1
  • Lone Sailor 15/1
  • Bravazo 20/1
  • Tenfold 20/1
  • Diamond King 30/1
  • Sporting Chance 30/1

There are 8 horses competing in the race and like I said above I expect the vast majority of the action to be on either Justify, who won the Derby, or Good Magic, who finished 2nd at the Derby with a very solid finish.

Preakness Stakes Top Picks

Below I will give my favourite two picks for the 2018 Preakness Stakes.  I will definitely be adding some exacta’s on these two horses, which should have a very solid payout if they do both finish in the top 2.

Justify 1-2

I do not think Justify winning the Derby was a fluke.  The race was as muddy as it’s ever been and Justify was still able to run away from the other contenders and win the race by a couple lengths.  He’s now won all four horses he’s every participated in (all in 2018) and he really seems like he could be the beast that everyone thought he might be after his win at the Santa Anita Derby.

I fully expect Justify to cross the finish line in first place on Saturday, and I actually think his odds with shorten from here to possibly something like a 1/3 favorite.  For that reason I will mostly be using him in exotic bets on Saturday, but I may also take him to win because I think it’s as close to a sure thing as you get in horse racing.

Here’s a look at his win over Good Magic in the Kentucky Derby:

Tenfold 20/1

Tenfold did not run at the Kentucky Derby, with his last race being a 5th place finish at the Arkansas Derby.  Magnum Moon, who was one of the favourites heading into the Derby, but faultered under the wet conditions, won that race by several lengths, but there was just a nose between 2nd and 5th behind him.  Quip actually came 2nd in that race and comes into the Preakness at 12/1 odds, but I think Tenfold at 20/1 is the much better value play.

The Arkansas Derby was Tenfold’s first step up in competition in his young career after winning 2 regional races earlier in the year.  He showed he can hang with the top horses in that race, as he could have just as easily finished 2nd as 5th, and then we would likely be talking about him at around a 10/1 betting line.  If he makes another step forward I think he could really be a factor in this Saturday’s race.

My favorite betting play for the Preakness will be an exacta bet with Justify 1st and Tenfold 2nd.  I may also take both horses to win because I think the odds are very fair for each horse at this time.
