The morning line odds and post positions for the 2019 Preakness Stakes are now available, which means we can start to break down this second race of the Triple Crown.
Improbable, who was also the favourite heading into the Kentucky Derby, is the favourite with odds of 5-2. Improbable gets the 4 post position, which is a decent drawing and should allow him to run a solid race. War Of Will is the second favourite, but he drew the 1 post position which isn’t ideal. His morning line is set at 4-1 heading into Saturday.
This field of 13 for Saturday’s Preakness is the largest the race has seen since 14 horses ran in 2011 (only 8 ran last year). With a large field anything can happen and it also indicates there are a lot of horses who feel they have a shot to win. Let’s get into it!

Preakness Stakes Top Picks
Below I will give my favourite two picks for the 2019 Preakness Stakes. I will definitely be adding some exacta’s on these two horses, which should have a very solid payout if they do both finish in the top 2.
I think there’s a good chance Improbable is a cut above the rest of the horses in this field. Improbable went into the Kentucky Derby as the final odds favorite at 3-1 for good reason. He finished second by a hair in both of of his Derby tune-up races, but both times it seemed like he was unfortunate not to win. At the Derby he officially finished 4th after crossing the finish line in 5th. With 20 horses and an issue that caused Maximum Security to be DQ’d you can find more excuses for Improbable.
All of that said, in the end the horses have to win. I generally like to back horses who find a way to get the job done, but even though Improbable hasn’t won in 2019, I’m willing to make an exception here because I do think this field is somewhat weak for a Preakness Stakes and looking at the other options I do think Improbable is easily the best horse.
Even if you don’t want to back Improbable for the win, I would definitely include him in any exotic bets because he will surely be in contention down the stretch.
Alwaysmining did not run at the Kentucky Derby, but he is the type of horse I like to back. He’s won his last 6 starts after starting taking until his 5th race to break his maiden. He seems to have gotten a taste for winning and although he has not been entered in any top races, he does have wins over Win Win Win and Gray Magician, so he’s not running against total nobodies.
This is a horse that has worked his way up from short distances, has plenty of experience racing, and has turned into a non-stop winner.
At these odds I’m willing to see if he can make it 7 in a row.
My favorite betting play for the Preakness will be an exacta bet with Alwaysmining 1st and Improbable 2nd. I may also take both horses to win because I think the odds are very fair for each horse at this time.
