Francis Ngannou is defending his heavyweight title for the first time vs interim-champion Ciryl Gane this Saturday, January 22nd at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
Ngannou defeated Stipe Miocic via second round knockout to finally win the title in March of 2021. Ngannou burst onto the UFC scene in 2015 and finished six straight fights in the first or second round to earn his first title shot with Miocic. He lost a decision in that fight, and then a non-eventful decision loss to Derrick Lewis dropped his stock further. After that, Ngannou went on a four fight run of first round knockouts of top UFC heavyweights that only required 162 seconds of cage time to finally book his rematch with Miocic. Ngannou is as deserving a champion as we’ve seen in the UFC heavyweight division and he had to pay his dues with 11 early round knockouts to finally achieve his goal. I expect him to bring his A-game to defend the title.
Ciryl Gane came into the UFC in 2019 and he’s won seven straight fights, including impressive wins over Dos Santos, Rozenstruik, Volkov and Lewis to book this shot at the champion. Many consider Gane to be a more complete fighter than Ngannou, but he will have to avoid the fight finishing power of the champion to deploy his skills.

I’m personally betting on Francis Ngannou to win this heavyweight title fight. Ngannou is incredibly dangerous, and I don’t think he’s getting the respect he deserves as the underdog in this fight. All it takes is one punch to land clean and Ngannou will win via knockout.
Yes, Gane has had an impressive start to his UFC career, and he is a deserving challenger, but I think Ngannou’s x-factor of being able to finish fights with one punch should be enough to get him the win at some point in this title fight.
