The morning line odds and post positions for the 2026 Preakness Stakes are now available, which means we can start to break down this second race of the 2026 Triple Crown.
Iron Honor, who has won two of his three career races, but most recently finished 7th at the Wood Memorial, is the Preakness favourite with morning line odds of 9-5. That said, there are five horses with 6-1 or shorter morning line odds, so the race is really up for grabs with several contenders. Derby winner, Golden Tempo, will not be in the field as he’s looking to rest before the Belmont Stakes, so there will be no Triple Crown winner this year.
The field of 14 horses is a larger than normal size for the Preakness Stakes, and with a field this size anything can happen. Let’s get into it!

The odds will change throughout the day depending on the amount of money that is wagered on the various horses in the field. Basically all of the bets taken on the Preakness will go into a betting pool and the odds will be decided by the amount wagered on each horse. Preakness Stakes Top Picks
Below I will give my favourite picks for the 2026 Preakness Stakes. I will definitely be adding some exacta’s on these two horses, which should have a very solid payout if they do both finish in the top 2.
Taj Mahal 5-1
I like horses who know how to win, and Taj Mahal has only ever crossed the finish line first in his three career races. His speed numbers are up there with the other top horses in the field, and he’s gotten faster every race. Taj Mahal is my pick to win even though he did not draw the best post position.
Napoleon Solo 8-1
My next pick will be Napoleon Solo, who is considered just outside of that main group of top contenders with a morning line of 8-1. This horse has had a bit of a slow start to the 2026 season with fifth place finishes at the Coolmore Fountain of Your Stakes and the Wood Memorial, but he had a very fast race winning the Champagne Stakes last October, which shows that he does have that top end speed ability. Not racing in a month and a half should have Napoleon Solo ready and focused on the Preakness, which should put him in the best position to have a strong race.
