The Sports Betting Canadian

Baseball isn’t as big in Canada as some of the other sports found here at Sports Betting Canadian (at least in my opinion), but the Blue Jays do generate a lot of hype and hope heading into each season.

Baseball is a great betting sport because there are so many games to bet on throughout a season.  MLB teams play 162 games in a season, which almost exactly double that of the NHL or NBA, and the professional football and soccer leagues play even less.  This huge amount of games gives baseball bettors a lot of opportunities to place bets and potentially find value.

If you are interested in betting on baseball I suggest doing so at one of the top Canadian sportsbooks recommended below.  The provincial sports lotteries, such as Proline, will take baseball bets, but the odds you receive are far worse than the betting sites I recommend, which means you will be leaving a lot of money on the table by not doing your baseball betting online.

How To Bet On MLB In Canada

If you are a Canadian looking to bet on MLB games online then you are in the right place. On this...

Different Baseball Bets

Baseball is a game that involves a lot of statistics.  If you’ve seen Moneyball then you know what I mean.  A large number of stats in a game is a bettors paradise because it means there is a lot to bet on in each game.  I’m going to break down the three most popular baseball betting options and then touch on some prop bets and futures that are also common baseball wagers.

Moneyline Betting

This is the most straight forwards baseball bet because you are simply wagering on which team will win the game.  The sportsbook will assign odds to each team in the game and your winnings are determined by the teams odds and your wager amount.  Here is an example:

In this example the Blue Jays are favourites with odds of 1.53 to win the game.  As an example, a $100 bet on the Blue Jays would payout $153 for winnings of $53 if the Jays won the game. The Rangers are underdogs with odds of 2.60, indicating a $100 bet on Texas would payout $260 (win $160).

Runline Betting

Runline betting is the equivalent of spread betting in other sports.  In the MLB the runline will virtually always be 1.5 runs.  This means the favoured team must win the game by 2 or more runs, while the underdog must either lose the game by a single run or win the game outright.  One run may not seem like a lot, but you would be surprised how many games in the MLB finish within 1 run.

In this example the Blue Jays are the favourites and must win the game by at least 2 runs for a runline bet on Toronto to be a winner.  The odds of this happening are 1.87.  If the Jays win the game by 2 or more runs then a runline bet on the Jays win, while if the Rangers win the game or it finishes within 1 run then the runline bet on Texas with odds of 1.95 is the winner.

Over/Under Betting

You can also bet on the total number of runs to be scored in a game.

The oddsmaker will set a total number of runs and you can wager on whether you think there will be more or fewer than that number of runs scored in the game.  The odds associated with each side of the over/under are also shown.  In the example above the over/under is set at 9 runs. You could bet on the game having 10 or more runs at odds of 1.80 or 8 or fewer runs scored at odds of 2.05. If exactly 9 runs are scored the over/under bets would push and the wagers returned.

Prop Bets

Baseball is a prop bettors dream.  There are so many stats in a single game of baseball that there are almost endless prop bets to choose from.  Here are some of the more popular prop bets that are available on most MLB games:

  • Most hits, runs and RBI’s between two players.
  • Most strikeouts between two pitchers.
  • Over/under on total strikeouts by a single pitcher.
  • Will a certain player hit a home run?
  • Which team will score the first run of the game?
  • Will there be a run scored in the first inning?
  • Total hits, runs and errors in the game.
  • Total home runs hit in the game.
  • Margin of victory.

These are just a few of the popular MLB prop bets.  In a World Series game the list would go on and on.

Futures Bets

You can also place futures bets in baseball.  The best example of an MLB futures bet would be which team will win the World Series this year.  You can place baseball futures bets at any time throughout the year because the odds will change depending on each teams perceived chances at that particular time.  It’s important to realize that your futures bet will be locked up until it is settled, so it is often more advantageous to simply bet on the team throughout the season than to lock the money up in a futures wager.
