Shakur Stevenson will move up in weight to challenge WBO super lightweight champion, Teofimo Lopez, for the WBO and The Ring 140 pound titles. The fight will take place this Saturday, January 31st at Madison Square Garden in New York. The event will be broadcast on DAZN pay-per-view.
Shakur Stevenson is 24-0 in his professional boxing career. Stevenson is the current WBC lightweight champion, and he’s defended that belt in his last three outings. Stevenson is widely considered to be one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the world, but it will be interesting to see how he looks after moving up a weight class.
Teofimo Lopez is 22-1 in his career with his only loss coming to George Kambosos Jr. by split decision in a fight that Lopez was a massive favorite in. Since that loss, Lopez has rebuilt his name, winning 6 straight fights and defending the WBO and The Ring super lightweight titles 3 times.

My Thoughts On The Fight
I think Teofimo Lopez may be being overlooked in this fight. Lopez was becoming one of the biggest stars in the world after his upset victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko in October of 2020. Lopez then took a fight with George Kambosos Jr. in November of 2021, losing the fight by split decision and losing all of his momentum in the sport. Lopez was a 13-1 favorite in that fight, but had an off-night and couldn’t get the job done. That fight with Kambosos Jr. was originally delayed due to Lopez contracting the COVID-19 in the summer months, so questions remain about how prepared Lopez was for that fight.
Since that loss Lopez has won 6 straight fights including some big names like Josh Taylor and Arnold Barboza Jr. Lopez had one bad night and his stock plummeted. He’s been building it back up ever since, but if Lopez can defeat Lomachenko in his prime then you have to think he has a realistic shot against Stevenson.
