I was high on DeMarco Murray last week and luckily for us he went off for 29.5 points in a great game against the Raiders. Melvin Gordon (17.8 points) and Fozzy Whittaker (10.6) were other targets who had fairly average games for their prices, but Forte had a tough game with only 8.4 points. It didn’t help Forte that Fitzpatrick threw 6 picks in this game, which resulted in the Jets getting behind by a large number quickly, which reduced Forte’s usage. When it comes to the running back position especially, game script is a huge factor in how much opportunity a player receives and in turn how many fantasy points he can put up.
I’m going with 3 running backs in my core this week. They all have great match ups and of course are involved in the passing game. Also make sure you check out my QB + receiver targets article for some stacks I’ll be using these running backs with.
C.J. Anderson ($6,500)
This is an Anderson week for the Broncos. Yes, they were able to get their passing game going last week, but that should result in more room for Anderson to work this week. Don’t get caught into the trap that the Broncos are a passing team now. The Bengals were daring the Broncos to pass, which resulted in a big game for Siemian and company, but the Broncos will still want to continue to help their QB with a dominant run game and high percentage passes moving forward.
Add in the fact that the Bucs have allowed 78.3 yards per game in the air to running backs and I think we could see a good number of targets for Anderson in this one as well, which is always great for DraftKings. Coleman/Freeman for the Falcons and David Johnson for the Cardinals had their way with the Bucs defense through the air in the first two weeks. I love Anderson in this spot and he could be lower owned after a down week 3.
Spencer Ware ($5,700)
Ware has really been getting the majority of work out of the backfield for the Chiefs with Charles out. It looks like Charles may be held out another week with the Chiefs heading into a bye in week 5. You should keep your eye on that, but if it’s the case I love Ware this week against the Steelers.
Last week Ware had only 8.3 fantasy points, but he had a TD turned into a fumble, so he would have been at 16.3 if that didn’t happen. What I liked out of last weeks stat line was that Ware had 20 carries, while West was only given 3. Ware hasn’t seen as many targets of late, but if they get behind in this game against the Steelers, similar to how they were behind against the Chargers in week 1 then I could see a huge game for Ware this week. He went off for 35.9 fantasy points in week 1 that included 129 receiving yards on 7 receptions. This Steelers defense is susceptible to running backs through the air having given up a ridiculous 97 yards per game through the air to running backs this season.
Ware has a very high ceiling this week, so I’ll be all over him in tournaments.
Jordan Howard ($3,700)
If you want to pay down, look no further than John Howard who will be taking over as the feature back in the Bears backfield. He ran for 45 yards on 9 carries last week, mostly after Langford went out with injury, and also added 4 catches for 47 yards. He’s the perfect running back for DraftKings because he catches balls out of the backfield and the Lions have given up 45 yards per game to RB’s through the air to this point in the season.
I think Howard will be a main cog in the Bears offense this week. I’m projecting around 20 touches which is an amazing opportunity for a guy at this price tag. He will be very high owned, but I don’t think you can fade him in this spot.
