Running back is a bit of a tough spot for me this week. Some of the pass catching running backs that I normally like to take have either been injured (Danny Woodhead) or are participating in the Thursday or Monday night games, so I don’t like to include them in the article considering most people want tips for the main slate.
That said I’ve found 4 running backs that I’m very confident in this coming week. Also be sure to check out my QB + receiver stack article.
Matt Forte ($7000)
Forte is coming off a huge week that saw him rush for 100 yards on 30 carries, including 3 TD’s. Forte is exactly the kind of running back I like to roster because he is also significantly used in the passing game. After two games with a ton of work I think its safe to say that Forte is going to be a workhorse back for the Jets this season. He’s showing he still has a lot left in the tank and in this scheme I see him continuing to have big games with a lot of touchdown and pass catching potential.
This week he’s up against a Kansas City defense that was absolutely thrashed by the Chargers running backs in week 1. They did a bit better against Lamar Miller this past week, but I think Forte is a great safe play with big upside depending on how the game script goes in this game, which I think is very winnable for the Jets.
DeMarco Murray ($6300)
Murray is probably my favourite running back play of the week. Like Forte, he’s really found a great spot in the offense on his new team. He’s been targeted in the passing game 7 times in both the first two weeks and when you can catch 5-7 balls in a game that really helps out your floor.
I see this game against the Raiders as being a shootout, but I think Murray will be a big part of the Titans offense regardless of the game flow due to his use in the pass game.
Melvin Gordon ($5800)
With Danny Woodhead out Melvin Gordon could become an elite running back for the forseeable future depending on how the Chargers choose to use him. I expect the Chargers to use Gordon as a workhorse back with Woodhead out, and he should also be the primary pass catcher out of the backfield. Gordon has played extremely well in the first two weeks with an average yards per carry of over 4 yards and also 3 catches in the passing game after Woodhead went out injured last week.
Gordon’s price jumps $1000 this week, but I think he’s still worth it especially considering he’s in a great spot with this matchup against the Colts. Indianapolis have given up the most DK points to running backs this season and I expect Gordon to be a huge part of the offense this week in order to help keep Andrew Luck and company off the field.
Fozzy Whittaker ($3800)
If you want to pay down this week then look no further than Fozzy Whittaker in Carolina. Whittaker ran for 100 yards on 16 carries (6.3 average) at home versus the 49ers last week and also added 3 catches for 31 yards. He’s up against a much tougher defense in the Vikings, but I still think the Panthers will gain the advantage in this game, which could lead to a lot of opportunity for Whittaker.
This is just too cheap for a starting running back on a strong team even with the tough run defense of the Vikings this week.
