E.P. Taylor Stakes

The E.P. Taylor Stakes is a horse race held every year in October at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.  The race is run over 10 furlongs (1.25 miles) and is meant for both fillies and mares of three years of age and over.  The race normally carries a purse of $500,000 and is held on the same day as the Canadian International Stakes.

The History of the E.P. Taylor Stakes

The E.P. Taylor Stakes race began back in 1956 and was originally named the Nettie Handicap.  The race was renamed in 1981 after Edward Plunket Taylor, who was the Ontario Jockey Club President for twenty years from the 1950’s to 70’s.

The race was originally run on the dirt track at Woodbine over a distance of 1 1/8 miles, but it was moved to the turf track and a distance of 1 1/4 miles in 1968 and has stayed there till the present day.

The record time for the E.P. Taylor Stakes is 2:00.68, which was run back in 2007 by Mrs. Lindsay.
