Breeders Stakes LogoThe Breeders’ Stakes is the third and final race of the Canadian Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing.  It mimics the Belmont Stakes race from the American Triple Crown in all respects, including the distance of 12 furlongs (1.5 miles).  The Belmont Stakes is known as the test of a champion and the Breeders’ Stakes also fits this saying because it is also a much further distance than either the Queen’s Plate or Prince of Wales Stakes and it would be the horses third race in 5 weeks.

The Breeders’ Stakes is held in mid August at the Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.  The race carries a purse of $500,000.

The last winner of the Canadian Triple Crown was Wando in 2003, and this was also the last time that a horse went into the Breeders’ Stakes with a chance at the Triple Crown.  You see less potential Triple Crown winners heading into the Breeders’ Stakes because trainers often choose not to run both the Queen’s Plate and the Prince of Wales Stakes.  This lack of excitement heading into the Breeders’ Stakes does affect the potential for this race to become hyped throughout the media.  It’s been over 10 years since the race really earned national attention due to the possibility of a Canadian Triple Crown winner.

History of the Breeders’ Stakes

The Breeders’ Stakes was first run way back in 1889, but it wasn’t until 1959 that it became the third race of the Canadian Triple Crown and the distance was moved to 1.5 miles to coincide with the Belmont Stakes.  Out of the past 7 horses that came into the Breeders’ Stakes having won the first two races of the Triple Crown 5 have went on to win the Breeders’ Stakes.  This statistic is in stark contrast to the American Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing where the past 13 horses to have won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes have not gone on to win the Belmont.

The fastest time recorded at the current distance was a time of 2:26.40 run by Charlie’s Dewan back in 1995.
