Breeders Stakes Logo

The Breeders’ Stakes is the third and final race of the Canadian Triple Crown of Thoroughbred racing.  It mimics the Belmont Stakes race from the American Triple Crown in all respects, including the distance of 12 furlongs (1.5 miles).  The Belmont Stakes is known as the test of a champion and the Breeders’ Stakes also fits this saying because it is also a much further distance than either the Queen’s Plate or Prince of Wales Stakes and it would be the horses third race in 5 weeks.

The Breeders’ Stakes is held in mid August at the Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.  The race carries a purse of $500,000.

The last winner of the Canadian Triple Crown was Wando in 2003. Since then two horses have won the first two races of the Triple Crown, but neither was able to follow those wins up with a victory at the Breeders’ Stakes to cement their place in history.

History of the Breeders’ Stakes

The Breeders’ Stakes was first run way back in 1889, but it wasn’t until 1959 that it became the third race of the Canadian Triple Crown and the distance was moved to 1.5 miles to coincide with the Belmont Stakes.

The fastest time recorded at the current distance was a time of 2:26.40 run by Charlie’s Dewan back in 1995.

The biggest longshot to win the race was Miami Deco, who won the race back in 2010 and paid out $132.10 on $2 win bets.

The Breeders’ Stakes has a rich history and hopefully we see a Canadian Triple Crown winner crowned after a Breeders’ Stakes victory in the near future.
