The Canadian International Stakes (official race info) is really the last big race of the year at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto and it always brings with it a lot of fanfare. Once again the race has delivered in bringing in some high end talent to Woodbine this Sunday to compete for the $800,000 purse.
There are 11 horses set to compete in this years Canadian International. Thundering Blue is the favourite heading into the race at odds of 2/1, while Spring Quality and Desert Encounter are the next two favourites in the race.
The Canadian International will be broadcast on TSN3 from 5-6pm EST this Saturday.

Thundering Blue is the favourite heading into the race at odds of 2/1. He’s coming off a win at the Stockholm Cup International in Sweden last month, where he ran the same distance over the same turf track in a very fast time of 2:28.40.
Spring Quality is the next favourite at odds of 4/1. This horse competed in both the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic and Sword Dancer Invitational the past couple months, which are very similar races to the Canadian International in that they are 1 1/2 mile races on a turf track. They are also both G1 races, so the level of competition for Spring Quality has been top notch. That said, Spring Quality finished in 7th and 3rd in those two races, but he has the experience.
The horse I will be betting to win this week is Johnny Bear at opening odds of 8/1. He’s coming off a win at the Norther Dancer Turf Stakes, which was a Grade 1 race of the same length on this same track. Johnny Bear also won the Northern Dancer last year, but followed it up with just a 10th place finish at the Canadian International. That said, this year Johnny Bear won the Northern Dancer in an extremely fast time of 2:25.74, which is two seconds faster than last years win and the fastest time it’s been won since the race switched to 1 1/2 miles in 1995. Johnny Bear has made improvements over the past year and I think this horse has the speed to put down another fast race and get a big win over a slightly stronger field this Saturday. Here’s the video of the Northern Dancer to get you pumped up about Johnny Bear’s chances:
