2016 Belmont Stakes Betting Picks and Morning Line Odds

Belmont Stakes 2016The Belmont Stakes race takes place this Saturday and even though the media attention won’t be as great as it was the past couple years when a horse had a shot at the Triple Crown this is still going to be a very entertaining race with some of the top 3-year-old thoroughbreds in the world competing.  The race is set to take place on Saturday at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.

Exaggerator, the horse that won the Preakness a few weeks back is the favourite heading into Saturday with morning line odds of 9/5 to win the race, which means the oddsmakers are giving him just over a 50% chance to win.  Exaggerator showed last week at the Preakness that he can close the final stretch with the best of them, but the Belmont Stakes is tagged “the test of a champion” due to it’s long distance of 1.5 miles, which is the longest race most of these horses will have competed in to this point in their lives.

Sports Betting Canadian PictureI personally never like to bet on the favourite in the Belmont Stakes because the distance plays such a factor and the horses have generally never competed at such a long distance so it’s really anyone’s guess as to how they are affected.

2016 Belmont Stakes Morning Line Odds

The morning line odds for the Belmont Stakes came out yesterday.  These odds will be shown when bets start to be accepted Saturday morning, but you need to realize that the odds can change throughout the day.  Horse racing uses the parimutuel betting system, which means that the odds change depending on the amount of dollars bet on each horse by the public.

  • Exaggerator 9/5
  • Stradivari 5/1
  • Destin 6/1
  • Cherry Wine 8/1
  • Creator 10/1
  • Suddenbreakingnews 10/1
  • Governor Malibu 12/1
  • Brody’s Cause 20/1
  • Lani 20/1
  • Forever d’Oro 30/1
  • Gettysburg 30/1
  • Seeking the Soul 30/1
  • Trojan Nation 30/1

It will be interesting to see how the odds move throughout the day.  I personally am going to be steering clear of Exaggerator at these odds and the fact that there are no real notable challengers makes me think the odds for Exaggerator may even shorten throughout the day.

Belmont Stakes Top Pick

Like I said before I’m not going to take the chalk in my Belmont Stakes picks.  I’m looking for a horse who has the ability to run this distance and still have some left in the tank for the finish.

Suddenbreakingnews 10/1

I really like Suddenbreakingnews in this spot.  I just rewatched the Kentucky Derby and this horse had a ton of gas left in the tank down the stretch.  He was way back and blocked in at the turn and had to come all the way across the track and still finished 5th, while being just a nose off of 3rd place.  Watch it below.  I also love the fact that he took the Preakness off.  These horses need rest and that should give him an edge over Exaggerator and the other horses having competed a few weeks back.

I was planning to pick two horses in this spot, but I really only like Suddenbreakingnews. I’ll be tossing some dollars on Suddenbreakingnews this Saturday and I hope that the odds don’t shorten too much from 10/1 before the race takes place.
